If you are a teacher, are married to a teacher, have ever been a teacher, or have a family member or a friend who is a teacher, you know for a fact that teachers do so much more than teach. Yes, teaching, curriculum, grades, and tests are important and necessary, but the teachers who go beyond the classroom often make the biggest and lasting impressions.
My husband is an English teacher and the head golf coach at Frisco Independence High School. The administrators and staff are an exceptional group of professionals and we are both blessed that he gets to be a part of this unique program. A new tradition was started Friday, August 14 at 8:00 am. Coach Douthit and his assistant coach, along with some fearless and selfless parents, made the trip from Frisco to Groesbeck, TX for a little team building and fun to kick off the new school year and season.
The Douthit family has a farm that has been in the family since 1904. To start the retreat off on the right foot, the golfers participated in team building and “get to know your teammates” activities. The students shared a little about themselves with each other, got to play some silly games and, later in the day, they set individual and team goals. There was also a lot of fishing, frog catching and grasshopper chasing. One of the girls caught a prizewinning bass that shocked her just as much as the adults. It was an amazing time for all!
The point of this is not to brag on my husband… (ok, may a little bragging), but truly I want to recognize and thank all of the amazing teachers, coaches and administrators out there who dedicate their lives to making a positive impact on students’ lives. As the new school year is almost upon us, I wish you good luck and I hope this year is the best one yet!
