Screen Addiction, Our Kids…and Us!
You’ve probably seen the news pieces and articles about our kids being addicted to screens. Do a quick Google search and there is much proof that device addiction is a real thing. The electronic devices we carry around in our pockets and our gaming centers are amazing things, but they can also be incredibly destructive. Screen addiction is a valid concern year-round, but especially during the summer months when our kids have more time on their hands.
WFAA-TV recently did a feature story that got us thinking. It’s an excellent piece with sound research. Very well done by David Schechter of WFAA. In it, Schechter references experts and research that connect internet/screen addiction to decreased brain function in our children. There is even an internet addiction test that can be completed.
My question to you is: Is it just our children who are addicted to screens?
And what does any of this have to do with real estate? Or with you and me?
Simply this, I would hazard a guess that the majority of us – as adults – have a screen addiction right along with our kids, grandkids, nieces, nephews, friends and so on. And please know that this is not us here at The Tomlin Team pointing the finger at everyone else. Those of us who work in real estate are right there with you. We are attached to our phones and devices – 24/7/365. We are guilty of letting the screen take too much of our attention, time and eye contact.
At The Tomlin Team, we believe in family. The importance of family in our lives and the lives of our clients cannot be stressed enough. Because of that, our challenge to ourselves, to you…to all of us – no matter our age – is to model what living a more “screen-free” life looks like to the children in our lives.
Let’s all put the devices down more often this summer and make more eye contact. Let’s go out and do things together. We are blessed to live where we do in that there are numerous family activities going on every weekend all over Collin County, Denton County – all over North Texas. Spend time together at the lake, play games together, get out of the house.
